The secret to a good night’s sleep

It's no secret that we all want a good night's sleep because we all want to feel refreshed and full of life and energy and for many of us having a great night’s sleep is like a dream. However, it has been found in studies that most adults only get less than 7 hours sleep a night, with 41% of Brits are getting under 6 hours nightly sleep.

We have been tricked over the years with so many secrets, remedies, and myths around the key to getting a good night's sleep. Thankfully over the past few years, enough research and studies from the US have been conducted to help us come to a solid conclusion on how to get the best night's sleep!

A recent study by US researchers has concluded that it's imperative to have a sense of purpose in life if you want to experience the best night's sleep. Instead of trying out all those over-priced sleep aids, we learned that simply defining an aspect in your day as 'meaningful' and reflecting on what benefits it could potentially bring to other peoples lives could actually be the difference between a restful and a restless night - and also improve your quality of life and happiness.

The study went on to reveal couples who feel their lives don't have a purpose were five times more likely to suffer insomnia and restless arms and legs syndrome.

The study included 832 people, ages 60-100. Some of these participants took part in the 32 question survey centered on sleep, some on 10 question survey on the purpose of life. Out of all the participants, those who felt their lives had meaning were 63 percent less likely to have sleep apnea and 52 percent less likely to have restless leg syndrome.

Yes, it is easy said than done because, in reality, no one can be positive 24/7. However, with the help of our sleep expert Dr. Nerina, this can be achieved by simply reflecting on your day before you hit your bed.

It is reported by The Sleep Counsel of the USA that phones in the bedroom cause disturbance with people scrolling their social media or emails before trying to sleep. Negatives side effects such as the inability to fall asleep, circadian rhythm disorders, and disturbing deep sleep can result in sleep deprivation. Therefore, please refrain from any late-night mobile phone usage in the bedroom.

Recently, we were told by Dr. Nerina about counting our blessings would help us to sleep well and sleep more. Of course, as everybody knows that as human as we are, we do need as much as 8 hours of sleep a day, after the research people found that after practicing this for one week they wake up without an alarm clock and found themselves ready for the day ahead.
